Vinod Dasa, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at Louisiana’s State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center, is pioneering the use of iOvera, a nonsurgical pain treatment for patients with arthritis and other knee and joint issues. He sees the use of iOvera as helping close a growing gap between some arthritis patients’ budgets and the treatments available to them to help ease their pain.
With iOvera, Dasa can temporarily freeze the nerves around the knee, alleviating a patient’s pain while avoiding nerve damage or surgery. “Whatever the reason is, this is another tool to try to help them if surgery is not an option or they don’t want surgery right away, ” he said. LSU Health Sciences Center is one of only 20 medical facilities in the U.S. to offer iOvera treatment for orthopedic use.
iOvera uses nitrous oxide canisters to freeze tiny needles to minus 126 degrees. Once they are injected into the skin, the needles freeze the pain nerves and bring instant relief.
“I’ve had some patients that can last for a few weeks. I’ve had other patients gain six to eight months of pain relief, ” Dasa said. “No chemicals, no drug, no nothing—we’re just taking advantage of the natural ability; the body’s natural response to cold, and putting it to our advantage.”
iOvera has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for pain. It is manufactured by Myoscience, Inc. of Silicon Valley, California. The company was founded in 2005 and is dedicated to focused cold therapy as a treatment for conditions involving nerves.

hmmm… .this prinicple is indeed a very old (century) practice to alleviate pain in the lame racehorse referred as pin firing (thermocautery) and freeze firing (using cold).

Genie. I live in DFW and am scheduled to see a pain management specialist on Wednesday who wants to prescribe narcotics for treating my knee pain. Please let me know how to contact the doctor here who treated you. I have lived with chronic knee pain for 10 years that has removed all impact activities from my life. I cycle (can ride 50 miles without issue) and do spin classes, but can not jog to the mailbox withing pain. This sounds like the ticket until MIT develops an artificial knee that is 90% as good a a biological one.
I am in a study that uses Iovera before TKA. My hope is that it will make the recovery period less painful and less dependent on drugs. Do you have any information outcomes to date?
We’re can I get this done in mo
I live in Michigan and I have chronic knee pain; where can I get this procedure? I viewed the map on iovera.com and there is no place
in Michigan that does this or maybe your map is old on the website?
Hope to hear from someone soon.
Thank you.
Dr Kassab in Bloomfield hills is the first one in Michigan to offer it.
Does this work on osteoarthritis?
I went to mt Saini hospital in ny to get iovera treatment but was told by the pain dr that he only uses it as a last resort. He suggested some other type of shots which I’m thinking about. I was very disappointed and didn’t understand why he was’ent on board with iovera. I just don’t know what to believe anymore. This was recent February 2017. Has anyone had iovera and did it help?
I have been told by my pain doctor that I need Cryoablation (freezing nerves). Radiofrequency lesioning did Not work for me.
Just need to know where and when?
I have been dealing with this for years. No medication works.

Hello we live in Pine Grove, PA and we can’t find a physician who uses iovera treatment for knee pain. Could you locate a physician that does this in our state of PA. Thank you.
I have an appointment for my Dr to do this procedure for I have osteoporosis in my knee and hope this procedure lasts for more then six months and does help? Also does medicare pay for this procedure? Thanks
I have knee OA; and i taked to my orthodo re your treatment;
and he suggested the “heat” treatment you destroy peripal
nerves;; apparently medicare requires a pre-test with lidocaine on 3 spots as a test of whether it will work.
The lidocaine test only reduced pain by 25%. Hence not worth doing; what are implication your freezing treatment of the lidocaine pre test
Interested in finding someone to do freezing procedure on my husband

I would like to know where I can get Iovera treatment in Dallas or near by. I have a very painful knee and would like to try this treatment.
Trying to find a doctor in the PA. area that does the IOVERA procedure. and also that takes medicare insurance. I have had both knees replaced, but in pain, I think scar tissue possible. Vey painful. Thought this IOVERA would help relieve the pain! Thank you, Jayne
I had iovera done as a pre-surgery knee replacement paid management. My surgery had to be rescheduled for 4 weeks later. Is it safe to have iovera done twice with only 4 weeks between treatment? Thank you.
I had the Iovera shot for one knee at the Nano Joint center in Pismo Beach, CA. The Dr. Injected this 1/4 “ diameter mass of frozen liquid nitrogen needles into my front thigh. It was painful, but worked on my knee pain. By the next day my whole BACK of my thigh had NO feeling and along the side edge of the numbed back of the thigh was a long area of extremely painful muscle/ tissue (?). I couldn’t even touch that area without having acute pain, – a pain rating on 8, i’d say. The knee pain returned at about 4-5 weeks. It has now been 12 weeks and the numbness has receded lower to the back of the knee. With the muscle tissue pain still there beside it. I told the Dr. And he gave no response at all, possible language barrier. It was sooo weird that I would never ever do it again! With that much numbness and adjacent tissue/muscle pain, I feared I might risk amputation!!
