Acetaminophen use during the whole surgical process—pre-, during and after surgery—significantly reduced opioid utilization and improved pain control according to a new study presented at the 2021 annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

In the study, “Effect of Preoperative and Postoperative Doses of Acetaminophen on Pain Management in Patients Undergoing Rotator Cuff Repair: A Prospective Randomized Study,” the researchers emphasized the importance of limiting opioid use in perioperative pain management in orthopedic surgery.
