Opioid-naïve patients who have hip fracture surgery are at risk of prolong opioid use, according to new study presented at the 2021 annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in San Diego, California.
The risk was most notable in older patients, the researcher found. Previous studies have investigated opioid dependence before, but most of them have been in younger patient cohorts.
