James Benjamin Chen, M.D., a total joint specialist, has joined the Irvine, California-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute.
“We are excited to welcome our new medical staff to Hoag Orthopedic Institute,” said Steven L. Barnett, M.D., chief medical officer of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “Hoag Orthopedic Institute has utmost confidence that our new orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician will be able to add to our collective high-quality care notability, high standards and superior patient outcomes.”
After graduating cum laude from California Polytechnic State University with an undergraduate degree in microbiology, Dr. Chen earned his M.D. at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Chen remained at that institution for an orthopedic surgery residency, then completed an arthroplasty surgical fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
“I am excited for the opportunity to be a part of one of the best orthopedic institutions in the nation and therefore be able to provide top notch joint replacement care to our active, southern California population,” Dr. Chen told OTW. “Hoag Orthopedic Institute is reshaping the future of orthopedic care and continues to demonstrate superior patient outcomes. I look forward to being a part of the Hoag team with the common goal to continue to improve the patient’s experience surrounding joint replacement surgeries.”
Reflecting on what led him to Hoag, Dr. Chen added, “I was fortunate to complete my subspecialty training in adult reconstruction and joint replacement surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery which has been ranked the #1 Orthopedic Hospital in the nation by US News and World Report for 12 consecutive years.”
“It was there I worked closely with many world-renowned joint replacement surgeons, and I continue to stay in touch with many of these mentors. It was this experience of providing the highest quality of care and being at the forefront of innovation and quality improvement that has me excited to now be a part of Hoag Orthopedic Institute.”
“I have a passion for emerging technologies within total joint replacement that I hope to further research and identify ways these tools can best improve patient outcomes. Not only can these tools assist with the technical aspects of surgery, but there are also platforms that can assist in engaging and educating our Hoag Orthopedic Institute patients. My goal is to have patients feel engaged as a part of the Hoag team as this is crucial for the excellent outcomes that Hoag Orthopedic Institute already achieves and together, we will continue to push the bar even further.”
