To put physicians on the same page regarding the diagnosis and treatment of sacroiliac (SI) joint pain and dysfunction, a multicenter team of researchers has developed a new set of guidelines. Their work, “American Society of Pain and Neuroscience Best Practice (ASPN) Guideline for the Treatment of Sacroiliac Disorders,” appears in the May 2024 edition of The Journal of Pain Research.
Co-author Timothy Deer, M.D., founder of the Spine and Nerve Center of the Virginias, told OTW, “We identified a need for guidance on the treatment of SI joint disease. The treatment was heterogeneous, and the outcomes for both surgeons and interventional spine physicians were often not optimal. We took a look at the evidence and clinical experience and gave a decision tree for treatment. This is a living document that will change with time, as more studies are done.”
