Researchers from Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute and OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina, set their sights on finding a better way to predict the odds of periprosthetic joint reinfection in total joint arthroplasty (TJA) patients.

Co-author Jesse Otero, M.D., Ph.D., a hip and knee surgeon at OrthoCarolina, told OTW, “Others have published, and we have consistently observed, that when two stage exchange fails, the organism on repeat surgery is often different from the original organism. We were puzzled by this and wondered whether specific details in the case could predict the next bacteria.”
