In an effort to bring clarity to an under-researched area of postoperative care, a research team from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation has published a comprehensive review addressing the safety of air travel following total hip and knee arthroplasty (TJA).

The study, titled When Is It Safe for Patients to Air Travel After Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty: A Comprehensive Review,” appeared in the April 22, 2025 issue of JBJS Reviews. The authors, led by Nicolas Piuzzi, M.D., Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of the Adult Reconstruction Research Program at the Cleveland Clinic, sought to close a longstanding gap in clinical guidance on venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis for air travelers following joint replacement.
