Published June 9, 2025, in the European Spine Journal, a new meta-analysis sheds light on patient and procedural risk factors that increase the likelihood of facet joint violation (FJV) during lumbar interbody fusion surgeries.
The study, titled “Risk Factors for Facet Joint Violation in Minimally Invasive and Open Lumbar Interbody Fusion,” evaluates the incidence and predictors of FJV—a complication that can compromise spinal stability and reduce long-term surgical success. The systematic review and meta-analysis were led by Dr. Natalia Anna Koc of Wroclaw Medical University in Poland, along with co-authors Drs. Tomasz Klepinowski, Radosław Bielecki, and senior author Dr. Grzegorz Miękisiak of the university’s Department of Neurosurgery.
