Orthopedic surgeons remain among the few specialists still largely working in physician-owned practices, even as independent practice continues to decline across U.S. healthcare, according to an analysis from the American Medical Association (AMA).

The AMA’s latest Policy Research Perspective reveals that only 42.2% of all physicians in 2024 work in private practices fully owned by doctors—a sharp drop from 60.1% in 2012. But orthopedics has so far resisted the trend more than most specialties, with 54% of orthopedic surgeons still in private practice.
