Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has long been the poster child for orthopedic success stories—widely performed, reasonably reimbursed, and boasting impressive survivorship stats. But what if we told you that some of those 10-, 15-, or even 20-year implant survivorship rates might be more optimistic than accurate? Turns out, our beloved traditional Medicare dataset may be quietly ghosting us.

A new study from the Mayo Clinic, published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (April 25, 2025), pokes a well-placed hole in the balloon of TKA survivorship optimism.
