A new study published on July 1, 2025, in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons suggests that preoperative aspiration of the knee following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture may not reduce the overall incidence of revision surgery or arthrofibrosis—but it could offer an important clinical benefit by significantly delaying the onset of scar tissue formation.

The study, titled Aspiration of the Knee Prior to Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Delays the Onset of Arthrofibrosis,” was conducted by a team of researchers including Paul M. Inclan, M.D., Muhammad Farooq Rai, Ph.D., Ling Chen, Ph.D., and Robert H. Brophy, M.D. The authors are affiliated with the University of Arkansas Medical Center (UAMS) in Little Rock, Arkansas.
