If you’ve ever had to talk a professional athlete through the pros and cons of microfracture, you’ll appreciate the latest reality check out of the U.K.: most elite athletes make it back to the field, but many won’t be there for long.
A new retrospective cohort study, published August 13, 2025, in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, looked at microfracture outcomes in elite-level soccer, rugby, and other professional athletes treated between 2011 and 2020. The work was led by David J. Haslhofer, M.B.B.S., with colleagues Jobe Shatrov, M.B.B.S.; Mary Jones, Ph.D.; Wahid Abdul, M.B.B.S.; Arman Motesharei, M.B.B.S.; Simon V.
