A new diagnostic accuracy study asked an increasingly obvious but fraught question: can today’s frontier vision models read a lumbar MRI with the same accuracy and dependability as a neuroradiologist?

Using the Radiological Society of North America 2024 Lumbar Spine Degenerative Classification Dataset with consensus labels from the American Society of Neuroradiology, investigators put an AI model to the test — NOT with static images or reports — but with synchronized video montages of volumetric lumbar MRI series.
