Martin W. Roche, MD, Director of Hip and Knee Arthroplasty at HSS Florida

Martin Roche, M.D., a pioneering orthopedic surgeon who performed the world’s first sensor and robotic assisted knee surgery, has joined HSS (Hospital for Special Surgery) Florida in West Palm Beach.

The former Director of the Robotic Joint Fellowship at Holy Cross Hospital, Dr. Roche, has performed thousands of minimally invasive reconstructive joint procedures since he began practicing in 1996. Dr. Roche routinely works with professional, amateur and recreational athletes, was a consultant team physician for the Miami Marlins, and is a member of the American and European Knee Society.

Born in Ireland, Dr. Roche graduated from Cork Medical School, then completed his residency and internship at the University of Miami. Along with John L. Wang, M.D., Dr. Roche will expand and lead the facility’s hip and knee joint replacement program as director of Hip and Knee Arthroplasty.

“HSS has been dedicated to advancing musculoskeletal health for 157 years, and has been privileged to help thousands of Florida residents enjoy better quality of life through better quality of movement,” said Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO of HSS. “Under the highly skilled care of Drs. Roche and Wang at the state-of-the-art HSS Florida facility, we are creating an international center of excellence for hip and knee replacements.”

Dr. Roche told OTW, “I’m excited to be joining the HSS team in Florida as part of the expansion of their joint Arthroplasty division. My first steps are to help grow a team of the highest quality joint replacement surgeons, nurses, and physical therapists; and build upon processes and pathways that follow the HSS New York program. We want our patients to feel a seamless transition with the same quality outcomes whether they have their care in New York or in Florida.

“I look forward to working with the most recognized brand of orthopedic quality and excellent outcomes—HSS. We will focus on education, innovation, and continued development of cutting edge technology to enable our patients to resume their active lifestyles. In Palm Beach we are enabling outpatient joint surgery for the appropriate patients.”

“As COVID-19 affected the need to keep our patients out of the hospital, we recognized that patients can go home the same day safely. This program of accelerated recovery coupled with physical therapy protocols has shown the ability for patients to recover quickly in their home setting. Florida is a growing market and our patients are seeking out the highest quality care. Our goal at HSS Florida is to provide that. We see the opportunity for a true international destination center for joint replacement surgery and treatment of our patients’ arthritic conditions.”
