Luke Macyszyn, M.D., MA, FAANS, FACS has joined California-based DISC Sports & Spine Center as a physician partner in anticipation of DISC opening its ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in Los Angeles, California.
Dr. Macyszyn is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon. He is currently seeing patients at DISC’s Marina del Rey clinic.
Dr. Macyszyn is joining DISC from the UCLA Health Spine Center where he directed the Complex Spinal Disorders and Deformity Research Program and served as Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, and Orthopedics. In that role, he led an National Institutes of Health-funded laboratory focused on utilizing artificial intelligence to help patients with spinal disorders.
OTW spoke with Dr. Macyszyn about joining the DISC team. Dr. Macyszyn told OTW, “The most exciting thing about joining DISC is working with like-minded people, singularly focused on delivering complex spinal services to patients in an outpatient setting that is designed for efficiency, comfort and safety.”
Dr. Macyszyn continued, “Although spine surgery has been performed in the outpatient setting for years, the DISC concept represents the most significant evolution of that model.”
Dr. Macyszyn brings 15 years of experience to DISC. He focuses on the minimally invasive treatment of complex spinal disorders including degenerative disease, disc herniation, scoliosis, and spine tumors. Per the press release, Dr. Macyszyn has “an impressive research track record advancing the use of AI [artificial intelligence] and radiology in minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS).”
The press release continued, Dr. Macyszyn “will play an integral role in opening DISC’s Marina del Rey-based ASC (launching Q2).” The new ASC will “combine the latest advances in minimally invasive technology and medical infrastructure with a world-class surgical team to elevate the patient experience in a safe, modern setting.”
At the new ASC, Dr. Macyszyn will work closely with DISC CEO and Founding Director Robert S. Bray, Jr., M.D. In the press release, Dr. Bray commented, “Dr. Macyszyn is a talented and innovative surgeon that we’re very proud to welcome to our team.”
Dr. Bray continued, “Not only does he share our vision for the future of spine, but he’s also bringing next-level research, tools and approaches that will help us redefine the gold standard of minimally invasive surgery.”
DISC is a sports and spine center focused on minimally invasive spine procedures and advanced arthroscopic technique. DISC is currently located in Newport Beach and Marina del Rey.
