In a commentary published July 2, 2025, in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, orthopedic surgeons Alparslan Uzun, M.D., and Ibrahim Azboy, M.D., examine the implications of a recent large-scale cohort study by Christiaan H. Righolt, M.D., and colleagues titled, Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty in Patients with BMI of ≥50 kg/m²: A Cohort Study with Long-Term Follow-up.”

The findings bring renewed urgency to the challenge of managing patients with extreme obesity undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
