UK-based Corin Group, backed by the Permira Funds, has agreed to purchase Raynham, Massachusetts-based OMNI Orthopaedics Inc. (“OMNI”), a pioneer in robotic-assisted total knee replacement.

Details of the transaction were not disclosed. European private equity firm Permira provided an undisclosed amount of funding for the transaction.

OMNI, by its own admission, is a leader in robotic-assisted knee replacement. Its OMNIBotics® system is an imageless total knee replacement system which combines a robotic cutting guide with a robotic tool to measure ligament function.

The system is designed to tailor implant positioning to each individual patient and, therefore, reduce patient pain while also accelerating rehabilitation.

Brian Lambton, Global Professional Education Manager for Cirencester, UK-based Corin, told OTW, “Corin’s aim is to revolutionize orthopaedics by gaining, understanding and sharing insight at every stage of the joint replacement experience and delivering clinically proven implants which are optimized by unique procedural technologies, OMNI’s robotic-assisted knee solution is perfectly aligned with this vision.”

Omni CEO Rick Epstein said the timing of the acquisition is perfect. “We are thrilled to be joining Corin to maximize the potential of our robotic solutions, adding another unique technology to their ecosystem.”

Lambton explained how OMNI aligns with Corin’s other assets. “Corin’s Optimized Positioning System™ (OPS™) technology was developed to provide surgeons with deep insights about individual patients functional hip anatomy, this in turn leads to more advanced patient specific surgical planning for optimized implant placement whilst maintaining procedural simplicity.”

“OMNI’s OMNIBotics® knee platform is able to provide live intra-operative planning and execution via real time data acquired through the BalanceBot™ robotic soft tissue analysis device which in turn feeds data through the workstation and then for precision surgical execution using the OMNIBot™ robotic cutting guide.”

“Between these two unique technologies Corin is the only orthopaedic company which is able to tackle functional implant positioning across both hip and knee arthroplasty.”

Lambton continued, “Corin has a history of launching innovative technologies at scale, having introduced OPS™ worldwide over the last three years. The acquisition of OMNI will allow us to work even more effectively and together to scale up the use of OMNIBotics® globally. With OMNIBotics, the surgeon will be able to better functionally align knees and, therefore, deliver better outcomes for patients worldwide.”
