The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) has awarded Craig Young, M.D., professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), its 2012 Founders Award. According to Maureen Mack, of Wauwatosa Now, the award is not given annually, but at the discretion of AMSSM leadership and is presented to the individual, group or organization who best exemplifies the practice of sports medicine.
Besides serving as director of primary care sports medicine in the department, Young co-directs the Annual Sports Symposium at the MCW. He is a team physician for a number of professional athletic teams including the Milwaukee Brewers and the U.S. Snowboarding Team, and is a company physician for the Milwaukee Ballet. He also provides coverage for sporting and special events, including serving as medical director for Lakefront Marathon and as a pool physician for the U.S. Olympic Committee, which appointed him as a team physician for the 23rd Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy.
Young received his medical degree at the University of California, San Diego, in 1988. He did his residency in family medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed a sports medicine fellowship with the Cleveland Clinic in 1992. He joined the MCW faculty in 1992. Since 2001, Young has been selected by his peers as a “Best Doctor” by the nationally known Best Doctor Inc. listing. He was elected president AMSSM in 2007-2008.
The AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of sports medicine physicians whose members are dedicated to education, research, advocacy, and the care of athletes of all ages. Founded in 1991, the AMSSM is now comprised of more than 2, 000 sports medicine physicians.
