Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (MOR) has swung opened the doors to its newest endeavor, the Rush Spine Tumor Center. Leading this effort is Matthew W. Colman, M.D., Chicago’s only physician to have completed fellowships in both musculoskeletal oncology and spine surgery.
Howard An, M.D., Medical Director of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, stated in the March 23, 2016 news release, “We are thrilled to announce the opening of the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush Spine Tumor Center, a place where patients facing a formidable challenge will receive care of the highest caliber. Dr. Colman goes to great lengths to make certain that his patients are armed with the latest information and treatments. They are in superb, caring hands.”
As indicated in the news release, “Dr. Colman obtained his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh. He undertook a fellowship in pediatric and adult musculoskeletal oncology at Harvard University and sought out further training as a fellow in orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery at the University of Utah.”
“There are many types of spine tumors, ” said Dr. Colman. “Some are cancerous and require a multidimensional approach involving radiation therapy and maybe even surgery. But many patients are surprised when I tell them their tumor may be benign and we can monitor it over time or treat it in a minimally invasive way.”
Dr. Colman told OTW, “My vision for the tumor center is that we leverage our world class capabilities in surgical, medical, and radiation oncology to become the national and international ‘go-to’ center for spine oncology.”
