U.S. hospitals will admit an estimated 33 million patients in the next 12 months. More than 1 million will have a knee or hip replaced. Which orthopedic hospitals in America do you want performing your replacement surgery?

U.S. News and World Report tells you with it most recent Best Hospital Rankings. The magazine ranked the top 50 orthopedic hospitals out of 1, 636 orthopedic hospitals in the U.S.

The hospital analysis covers clinical specialties, procedures and medical conditions. Scores are based on data that include survival, patient safety, nurse staffing and other factors. Hospitals are ranked nationally in specialties from cancer to urology and rated in common procedures and conditions such as heart bypass surgery, hip and knee replacement and colon cancer surgery.

The rankings focus on challenging care for patients who had particular procedures or conditions at a defined level of severity and complexity.

Data Sources

The magazine analyzed objective data from multiple sources, including a federal data set known as the Standard Analytic File (SAF), which contains details of every hospital admission paid for by traditional Medicare. Researchers used SAF data on inpatients age 65 and older who were treated from 2012-2014 to assess each hospital’s risk-adjusted rates of mortality, readmission and other outcomes.

Reputational surveys of physicians are also factored in. Surveyed physicians were asked to name up to five hospitals they consider the best in their specialty for difficult cases.

It is worth noting that Midwest hospitals dominate the rankings, with the East and West Coasts rounding out the top spots. Missing from the top of the list were any Southern or Southwestern hospitals for, example, Texas or Arizona.

We have not listed all 50 hospitals, but here are U.S. News and World Report’s top twenty. To read the rest of the rankings, click here: http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings/orthopedics.
