Pablo G. Castañeda, M.D., a past president of the Mexican Society of Pediatric Orthopedics, has joined  Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center as its new chief of pediatric orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Castañeda commented to OTW, “I joined NYU Langone Medical Center at very exciting time for research and new clinical programs in orthopedics, but what is most exciting to me right now is the planning for the much-anticipated opening of Hassenfeld Children's Hospital of New York at NYU Langone in 2018. This new state-of-the-art facility will give us an opportunity to provide top orthopedic care for our child and adolescent orthopedic patients, and access to new technologies, programs and physical spaces designed to create a positive, healing environment during what can be a difficult time.”

“My immediate plans over the next several months are to build relationships with all the healthcare providers in the NYU Langone system to foster collaboration and ensure the best possible outcomes for our pediatric orthopedic patients across the New York metro area.”

“I have a special interest in treating and improving outcomes for children and adolescents who have hip disorders, such as slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, and developmental hip dysplasia, and we plan to build a robust program at NYU Langone to lead research and better treat these conditions. In the short time I have been here, we have already begun collaborating with our adult reconstructive surgery colleagues to identify and perform hip preservation procedures on child and adolescent patients with congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, in order to prevent the need for a hip replacement in young adulthood. We are also collaborating with colleagues throughout the department of pediatrics to treat complex cases with orthopedic care considerations.”

The PR staff at NYU wrote this about Dr. Castañeda: “Dr. Castañeda, who also holds the academic title of Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU School of Medicine, is overseeing an aggressive expansion of pediatric orthopedics throughout Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital and its affiliated locations in the New York metropolitan area.”

“Prior to joining NYU Langone, he practiced for 10 years in Mexico City at both the Shriners Hospital for Children and the American British Cowdray Medical Center, where he also held the academic title of Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.”

“With a particular expertise in hip and pelvic disorders in children and adolescents, Dr. Castañeda treats patients with ailments such as Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) and developmental hip dysplasia, a condition that is underdiagnosed, and often leads to hip replacement relatively early in adult life.”

“Dr. Castañeda received his medical degree from Anahuac University in Mexico City, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at National Autonomous University of Mexico. He also served a pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and in adult reconstructive hip and knee surgery and prosthetic design research at Nuffield Orthopedic Centre in Oxford, England.”
