DePuy Synthes, the orthopedics business of Johnson & Johnson, has reached an agreement to add a dual-mobility acetabular cup to its portfolio of hip replacement implants, instruments and biologics. This move comes as a result of an agreement between DePuy Ireland Unlimited Company (based in Ringaskiddy) and Société d’Etude, de Recherche et de Fabrication (SERF), based in Décines-Charpieu, France..
SERF was created in 1973 to facilitate the design and manufacture of orthopedic implants. According to Aaron Villaruz, global platform leader for DePuy Synthes hips, SERF was the company that developed the first dual mobility hip system with the late Professor Gilles Bousquet, M.D., professor at the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne (France), over 30 years ago.
According to DePuy, “SERF has long been an innovator in dual-mobility technology, having developed the dual-mobility concept in the 1970s. DePuy Synthes is a global leader in hips, and its deep and broad portfolio includes the CORAIL Hip Stem, which has a 96.3% survivorship at 25 years.”
“Per the agreement, DePuy Synthes plans to provide the latest SERF dual-mobility acetabular cup under its own brand name to global markets beginning in the latter half of 2018 subject to regulatory approvals in the U.S. and Europe (additional registrations in certain other geographies are planned to follow).”

The agreement is unique in that it allows us to enter the market as quickly as possible, relying on proven manufacturing processes and technology.”
“This technology has evolved over time through improved design, materials, fixation & clinical experience with more than 250,000 Dual Mobility cups. The clinical heritage and evolution of this dual mobility has been refined into the product we will offer this year.”
