Ontario Canada’s Intellijoint Surgical Inc. has just reached the notable milestone of 10,000 total hip replacements (THR) using its flagship product, the Intellijoint HIP smart navigation system!

The lucky surgeon who performed the 10,000th Intellijoint HIP case was Claudette Lajam, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital.

She commented on her experience saying, “I have always been eager to employ technologies that can enhance the accuracy of total joint replacements and improve outcomes for my patients. Intellijoint HIP was easily integrated into my existing surgical workflow. Seeing the anteversion and inclination measurements during acetabular positioning allows me to deliver reproduceable results. This brings confidence to myself and—more importantly—my patients.”

Dr. Lajam continued, “A good navigation system is a tool for the surgeon. It does not replace the surgeon. It should add little time to the surgery, and be easily employed within the same surgical field, with minimal additional incisions or exposures. It should allow the surgeon to make better decisions by offering information; not making the decision for the surgeon. Also, the less equipment needed for the system, the better.”

“This system, once learned, adds little time to surgery, but gives valuable information to the surgeon so she can be sure she is placing the components where desired. It does not attempt to replace the surgeon or force her hand, so she can make the final decisions about where the implants are placed.”

Intellijoint HIP, according to the company’s marketing literature is “a surgeon-controlled smart navigation system. It provides real-time, intraoperative measurements for accurate, fast, and easy implant alignment for cup position, leg length and offset. It is an open-platform system that is suitable for primary and revision THR and is compatible with all major surgical approaches. Intellijoint HIP has a short learning curve of three to five cases and adds less than three minutes to the OR time. Over a dozen peer-reviewed clinical studies have been published supporting the efficacy and accuracy of Intellijoint HIP.”
