Boca Raton, Florida-based healthcare technology company, Modernizing Medicine, has announced its acquisition of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania-based Exscribe, Inc., an orthopedic electronic health records (EHR) vendor.

In 2000, orthopedic surgeon Ranjan Sachdev, M.D., M.B.A., C.H.C. was looking for a better way to manage his practice. Dr. Sachdev worked with orthopedists and information technology professionals to create Exscribe EHR, an orthopedic healthcare solution. It enables “orthopedists to use one-click treatment plans for specific conditions, including orders for surgery and therapy, prescriptions, patient education, referral letters, and more.”

Dr. Sachdev has served as Exscribe’s CEO since its founding. Dr. Sachdev and other members of the Exscribe team will be joining Modernizing Medicine following the acquisition. Dr. Sachdev discussed how the acquisition would impact Exscribe customers stating, “Existing Exscribe customers will experience very few immediate changes. In the long term, we look forward to leveraging the decades of expertise from both companies to build fully interoperable EHR technologies that solve administrative inefficiencies and promote orthopedic excellence.”

Modernizing Medicine was founded after Daniel Cane visited his dermatologist Michael Sherling, M.D. for a routine medical exam. The two realized that they could improve how dermatologists kept patient records. The pair coded a solution built around dermatologists’ workflow which eventually led to the creation of EMA® EHR and the founding of Modernizing Medicine in February 2010. Cane currently serves as Modernizing Medicine’s CEO and Dr. Sherling serves as its chief medical and strategy officer.

Since its founding, Modernizing Medicine has grown to serve eight specialties including dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, pain management, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, and urology. In 2015, Modernizing Medicine expanded beyond EHR with specialty-specific suites of products and services.

Modernizing Medicine General Manager of Orthopedics and Pain Management Albert Norweb discussed the acquisition with OTW. “We are excited to welcome Exscribe to the Modernizing Medicine family and for the ways we can continue to innovate specialty-specific technology for orthopedists. This partnership builds on decades of shared experience and expands our top orthopedic talent, enabling us to enhance our modern cloud-based, advanced EHR, practice management and technology suite.”

Norweb continued, “With a shared passion for improving physician efficiency, reducing burnout, and supporting value-based care, we plan to provide more solutions to empower orthopedic healthcare providers for many years to come.”
