Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based Parvizi Surgical Innovation, LLC has just announced an investment and partnership with PrecisionOS, a company that provides “medical-grade, interactive and industry-recognized virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences for surgical training and education.” Parvizi Surgical Innovation encompasses nearly 100 clinicians located in many of the foremost educational institutions around the globe.

“The PrecisionOS platform optimizes surgical education through cutting-edge gaming and simulation capabilities while providing endless growth opportunities for industry-wide surgical advancement,” said Javad Parvizi, M.D. founder and CEO, Parvizi Surgical Innovation.

Also the Direcor of Clinical Research at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, Dr. Parvizi added, “The technology offers a proven model for success given its robust clinical validation from two recent, randomized controlled trials and the support of its experienced and diverse surgeon advisory board. We look forward to aligning ourselves with PrecisionOS as they continue to pave a strong path forward for supporting surgeons within our operating rooms, as well as researchers, industry leaders, and all other parties involved in providing elevated and modernized surgical experiences.”

According to PrecisionOS, their company “brings together a groundbreaking team of industry experts intersecting surgical education, gaming, and film with simulation and haptics.”

Danny P. Goel, M.D., M.B.A., M.Sc., is a clinical associate professor in the University of British Columbia Department of Orthopedic Surgery and CEO of PrecisionOS. When OTW asked for clarification on what gaming capability might be most helpful for surgeons, Dr. Goel said, “Game development is structured around two relevant core principles: Hand eye coordination and decision based progression; both of which have direct application to surgical education.”

As for why PrecisionOS was the ideal partner, Dr. Parvizi explained, “PrecisionOS has a mission which aligns with our organization. To deliver high quality experiential education to anyone, anywhere at any time. Their team, led by orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Danny Goel as CEO and Founder combines the highest quality of surgeon educators, veteran game developers with simulation and haptics advisors.”

“They have validated their technology through two RCTs [randomized controlled trials] in senior orthopedic surgery residents. These studies are published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (Am) and the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open demonstrating the impact and value of VR on skill and knowledge acquisition. This, combined with their wireless multiplayer feature (permitting mentorship across continents with no travel), has resulted in their relationships with leading professional societies, top medical institutions and medical device companies. Overall, the choice was very clear how PrecisionOS is an ideal partner for Parvizi Surgical Innovation.”
