Tampere, Finland-based biotechnology company Bioretec Ltd. has established a scientific advisory board composed of five international professors and physicians with notable professional expertise in their fields.

Bioretec creates pediatric and adult orthopedic implants that are both “strong, safe, and reliable” and “bioabsorbable and bioresorbable.” Its newest product, the RemeOs™, is currently undergoing clinical trials. According to the website, it is a “patented bioresorbable metal” developed for “load-bearing indications.”

Bioretec Director of Marketing and Sales Lauri Hokkanen told OTW, “We aim to make an impactful change in the orthopedic industry with our new resorbable biometal. The SAB [scientific advisory board] endorses the development of our next generation RemeOs™ Screw portfolio with its comprehensive scientific and clinical experience.”

The scientific advisory board includes Prof. Dr. Klaus Dresing; Peter Giannoudis, BSc, MB, M.D., FACS, FRCS; Prof. Dr. Fan Liu; Rodrigo Pesantez, M.D.; and Prof. Dr. Endre Varga. This group will help further the clinical development of the products in the Bioretec pipeline. According to the press release, the scientific advisory board will aid in direct communication with the surgeon communities “allowing interactive knowledge transfer and sharing clinical experience.”

Prof. Dr. Klaus Dresing brings his 30 years of trauma surgery and orthopedics experience to the Bioretec scientific advisory board. He is active in the international trauma and orthopedics community and has held various leadership positions with AO Trauma. He also reviews orthopedic publications and is currently the “[h]ead and speaker of the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) Guidelines Commission.”

Prof. Dr. Peter Giannoudis is a professor at United Kingdom-based University of Leeds School of Medicine and an honorary consultant at Leeds General Infirmary. He has served in numerous leadership positions with many notable groups and is currently serving as president of the European Society of Tissue Regeneration in Orthopaedics and Traumatology. According to the press release he has “almost 700 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 12 books.”

Prof. Dr. Fan Liu is the vice president, chief, and professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at the China-based Affiliated Hospital to Nantong University. Per the press release, he has over 40 years of surgical trauma experience and serves in leadership positions with the Chinese Orthopedic Association and the Chinese Association of Orthopedic Surgeons. Additionally, he is an “editor in [a] number of orthopedic journals and a globally awarded scientific researcher.”

Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Pesantez is a trauma surgeon and according to the press release he specializes in “hip, trauma and reconstruction.” His numerous leadership positions include his current role as chairperson of AO Trauma Latin America. He is also a published author in the orthopedic community.

Prof. Dr. Endre Varga is an experienced researcher in the field of bioabsorbable materials and, per the press release, has “92 scientific publications/book chapters.” He is a professor and head of the trauma department at the Hungary-based University of Szeged. He is active in the orthopedic community, serving as the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) European Committee founder and Hungarian Trauma Society past president.
