New York, New York-based Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), a leading center for orthopedics, rheumatology, and rehabilitation, has named Sheeraz Qureshi, M.D., M.B.A. co-chief of spine service, effective October 1, 2022.
Dr. Qureshi also serves as the Patty and Jay Baker Endowed Chair of minimally invasive spine surgery as well as professor of orthopedic surgery at New York, New York-based Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Qureshi joins Andrew A. Sama, M.D., as co-chief of HSS Spine. He is succeeding Harvinder S. Sandhu, M.D., MBA who will become co-chief emeritus of HSS Spine. Dr. Sandhu is also going to become medical director of HSS Orthopedics with Stamford Health, based in Wilton, Connecticut. Dr. Sandhu is taking over for Charles “Chip” Cornell, M.D., who is retiring next month.
Dr. Qureshi told OTW, “I am looking forward to leading an incredibly talented team of spine specialists who are all focused on maintaining the tradition of excellence in clinical care that HSS is known for, and collaborating on research efforts to continue to drive the field of spine surgery forward.”
Dr. Qureshi’s clinical practice, according to the press release, “focuses on minimally invasive and motion-sparing spine procedures using the latest technologies.” He came to HSS in 2017 from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City where he had served as chief of minimally invasive spine surgery and associate director of the spine center.
Over the course of Dr. Qureshi’s career, he has been named as an author or co-author of over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles. He has also given countless lectures and trained surgical fellows both in the United States and abroad.
The HSS Spine team treats more than 22,000 patients every year for back and neck pain. While most patients receive non-surgical treatment, according to the press release “HSS performs 138% more spine surgeries than the next leading hospital.”
HSS President and CEO Louis A. Shapiro commented in the press release, “Our spine service is a key reason why HSS has been ranked the #1 orthopedic program in the world, and in the United States for 13 consecutive years.”
Shapiro continued, “I know that Drs. Qureshi and Sama and the HSS Spine team will continue to advance the field and create new possibilities for our patients.”
