Orthopedic surgeon, John Thomas Irwin, M.D., who sustained an orthopedic surgery career for nearly a half a century, died at age 74 on October 2, 2022.
Irwin earned his bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, and graduated with a degree in medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1974. He completed his orthopedic residency program at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
Dr. Irwin was a widely respected and highly rated (by his patients) orthopedic surgeon at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. His orthopedic practice was based in Yardley, Pennsylvania. He was also a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Irwin “was known by his patients to be professional, articulate, compassionate, and willing to adjust his schedule to meet their needs,” his family wrote.
They also said that he was always grateful for the support of his office staff, including Denise Sullivan, Anita di Silvestro, and Lynda Bowes, and also loved his “second family”—his colleagues in the OR.
Irwin was born on March 26, 1948, in Montclair, New Jersey, and grew up in Caldwell, New Jersey, but lived in Yardley for the past 38 years. Throughout his life, he was an avid reader, particularly of history, and enjoyed astronomy, bird watching, skiing and scuba diving.
He was also a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles football (American) team.
He is predeceased by his parents, Dr. Francis Irwin and Eva Irwin. He is survived by his wife Camille Irwin and his four children, Dr. John Daniel Irwin of Phoenixville, James Francis Irwin of Abingdon, Maryland, Dr. David Lewis Irwin of Slatington, Pennsylvania, and Camille Elizabeth Irwin of Yardley.
He also leaves behind his sister Patricia Irwin of State College and his beloved Dachshunds, Chase and Cole. He will also be dearly missed by his friend Kenneth Ritchie.
His family wrote that his children were the focus of his life and his love of medicine inspired them to follow in his footsteps.
