Swiss-based Medartis Inc., (with U.S. headquarters in Warsaw, Indiana) and Brisbane, Australia based Field Orthopaedics have entered into an exclusive global distribution partnership which significantly expands Medartis’ portfolio of instrumentation for hand repair.
Medartis is a specialized orthopedic company focused on head and extremity surgery. With the partnership, Medartis will add the NX Nail system to its hand portfolio, complementing its plating systems and screw portfolio.
The purpose of the NX Nail is “to rigidly fix bone fragments in space while crossing the fracture to act as a strut.” It is also an “intraosseous, minimally invasive treatment option.”
It’s indications for use include repair of the phalanx, metacarpal, scaphoid and ulna; diaphyseal trauma, osteotomies, and non-unions; extra articular fractures or osteotomies where the surgeon wants to minimize soft tissue disruption and maintain length; and for non-union revisions where surgeons want to avoid compression and augment with bone graft.
OTW spoke with Medartis Chief Technology Officer Ryan Schlotterback about the partnership. When asked what prompted the partnership, Schlotterback explained to OTW, “We had been aware of Field Orthopaedics and their early entry into this market. We started discussions and as we began to talk the strength of the partnership became even more clear.”
Schlotterback continued, “It was a pleasure working with Patryk [Field Orthopaedics CEO Patryk Kania] through this process and we look forward to what’s ahead.”
OTW also asked Schlotterback about goals for the partnership for the remainder of the year. Schlotterback told OTW, “We hope to have the NX Nail Systems mostly, if not fully, deployed to our sales channel partners by the end of the year.”
Schlotterback continued, “We’ll continue to work together to have the greatest impact in the market. We already have significant interest from our surgeon customers.”
