Devon A. Hoover, M.D., a well-respected neurosurgeon in Michigan, was found shot dead in his Detroit home on April 23, 2023. He was 53.
According to the New York Post, his body was found in a plastic sheet in his attic. He had been shot in the head. Authorities believe the shooting was related to a domestic incident. He was single and lived alone. His death remains under investigation.
At the time of his death, Hoover was a neurosurgeon with Ascension Healthcare and worked at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit, Henry Ford Hospital also in Detroit and McLaren Port Huron Hospital in Port Huron, Michigan.
Hoover earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis in 1996. He then did his neurological surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit from 1996 to 2002 and was certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
According to those who knew him best, his friends and family, Dr. Hoover knew very early in life that he wanted to be a doctor. “Throughout his career, he served his patients with exceptional skill and compassion.”
Hoover was recognized each year since 2008 “as one of Metro Detroit’s most respected neurological surgeons” in Hour Detroit Magazine’s annual ‘Top Docs’ rankings.
His patients remember him as a warm and caring doctor and human being. Adam Walder, who had been Hoover’s patient for more than 20 years, told a local television station, WXYZ, “Not only was he a fantastic surgeon, but just a wonderful human being. Those three days in the hospital [after surgery], he’d come in the morning to check on you, call you after your discharge to check on you. You just don’t see that anymore.”
Another patient, Laura Wilkins wrote on Dr. Hoover’s memorial website, “Thank you, Dr. Hoover, for your kindness, caring love you gave to us all. We will miss you. Love and blessings to all his friends and family. You are all in our hearts.”
Dr. Hoover was born on November 18, 1969, to Clarence and Lauretta Hoover in Elkhart, Indiana. He was the fourth of seven children and only son. He grew up on his family’s dairy farm and before college he worked alongside his family milking the cows, and planting and harvesting crops.
Hoover’s mother passed away four days after his death. He is survived by his father and by his six sisters, Diana Wenger, Lila Graber, Linda Herschberger, Beth Lechlitner, Andrea Martin, and Laurie Hoover. He also leaves behind 22 nieces and nephews, and 8 great nieces and nephews.
